Sony WH-1000XM3: First Impressions

Sony's WH-1000X range is their premium headphone offering with Active Noise Cancellation. The company has launched the third generation of the headphones in India called WH-1000XM3 today and it comes with a number of improvements. Priced at Rs 29,990, the headphones are available for pre-booking from 11th to 18th on Amazon India and Croma. It will be available from 18th onwards on various offline stores.

Design

Compared to its predecessor, the 1000XM3 has a revamped design. It might not be visible immediately but the earpads are now larger to cover the ears. On the top, the headband now has extra padding for comfort. Plus, Sony has reduced the curve of the headband which allows for a much better fit. The headphones come in two colours - black and platinum silver with matching carry cases. The right earcup has the touch controls just like the 1000XM2 and they work well. We also liked the foldable design - you can twist the earcup to make it flat and it can even be folded for portability.

Connectivity
The 1000XM3 comes with Bluetooth 4.2 wireless connectivity and also support Qualcomm AptX. There is also NFC connectivity for quick pairing and it also has an aux-port for wired use if the battery runs out. However, the headphone only support connection to one device and not two devices simultaneously which is disappointing.

Audio Output
Sony has improved the sound output on the XM3 compared to the 1000XM2. It has 32-bit audio signal processing and a DAC that acts as an amplifier too. The results is thumping bass without loosing any details. In addition, the headphones also have support for Hi-Res Audio. We used the headphones briefly for listening to music - in our opinion, the sound output is great for music lovers of any genre.

Active Noise Cancellation
One big upgrade on the 1000XM3 is the use of a new noise cancelling processor called as the QN1. Using the QN1, the 1000XM3 is able to provide excellent noise cancelling as it detects the ambient noise and adjusts the noise cancellation accordingly. Moreover, the headphones also offer the option of calibrating the noise cancellation manually to get the best results. We used the headphones in a busy office environment and it was able to mute out 95% of the surround noise which is very impressive in our opinion.

Battery Life
Battery is another feature on which the XM3 has improved. It now delivers up to 30 hours of battery life on a full charge. What impressed us most is that with just 10 minutes of charging, the headphones now offer 5 hours of usage. This is possible thanks to the use of a USB Type-C port on the headphones instead of a microUSB port which was there on the XM2.

Conclusion
Other than the above, 1000XM3 still offers all the unique features that we loved on the 1000XM2. It has the sense engine, quick attention mode, sensitive microphones and option to invoke the smartphone voice assistant from the headphones. At its asking price, the 1000-XM3 directly competes with the Bose QC35 and from the first impressions it offers superior performance than the Bose. The price includes an aux-cable, carry case, USB Type-C cable for charging and an in-flight adapter which makes it great for travel.
