NEW DELHI: Footballer Sunil Chhetri’s plea for supporting the national football team was the most retweeted post on Twitter in India this year, while the southern film industry clinched seven of the top 10 hashtags with movies including #Sarkar, #Viswasam, #BharatAneNenu, #AravindhaSametha and #Rangasthalam.

Chhetri’s video post of June 2 was retweeted about 60,000 times and was viewed 1.1 million times.



Conversations around women’s safety gained greater momentum with #MeToo and #JusticeForAsifa and the accounts of Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Amit Shah were the most talked about on the social media platform, Twitter said on Tuesday, revealing the biggest moments in India in 2018.

The release of the Tamil film #Sarkar, #MeToo, #KarnatakaElection, #KeralaFloods, #Aadhaar, #JusticeForAsifa, #DeepVeer, #IPL2018, #WhistlePodu and #AsianGames2018 were the most influential hashtags, generating the most conversations.
