Mishra believes virtual meetings are shorter, more effective and productive.
Tanul Mishra, CEO of Afthonia Lab constantly travels between Bengaluru and Mumbai for work reasons as Afthonia is based in Bengaluru and she is based in Mumbai.
The incubator for fintech startups boss told ET Panache, "My team and I have already been using multiple tools to stay connected - like Trello, Zoom and Slack. We’re also more accustomed to the WFH culture in terms of technology, processes and structure because a lot of our stakeholders and mentors are internationally based."
Mishra believes virtual meetings are shorter, more effective and productive although we miss the in-person, face-to-face interaction with colleagues and the office energy. Plus, working remotely is great to reduce our carbon footprints.
Fitness, especially during this time is not just physical but mental and emotional too feels the Afthonia lab CEO. "Practicing Yoga and Krav Maga have helped me both in terms of my physical as well as emotional fitness. It keeps me agile, helps me to focus and create a better sense of general well being. Also, reading and solving Sudoku quizzes help to keep the grey cells active," she said.
Mishra is trying her hand at reading and writing Malayalam during the lockdown. "It’s a language that I understand to some extent. I want to learn to read and write because it has some great literature. It helps to keep myself focussed on learning a new skill and not get overwhelmed by the occasional monotony of the lockdown," she elaborated.
Being at home for a long time can sometimes blur lines between work time and family time feels Mishra. "It’s about having a routine and scheduling your day and work calls in such a way that you have some break to unwind and refresh. So typically, unless I have something very essential like international calls that happen late in the day, I try to wind up by about 6:30 pm on a daily basis. Additionally, I fix up a lunch hour where I’m not sitting in front of the laptop and working. The temptation to pull the day beyond regular hours is high but it is important to take a conscious break and stick by a routine," she ended.

Start by identifying a ‘work base’ where your equipment and materials remain undisturbed, even if you shift locations during the day. This is essentially your workstation. Maybe you could even consider personalising it, the way your actual workstation in office is.

In a virtual setting it is hard to tell when it’s polite to interject and when it’s not. If you are the team lead, make sure there’s time and opportunity for all voices to be heard. Perhaps intervene if any one person seems to be dominating the conversation for too long.
