Lata Mangeshkar's demise an 'end of an era': Anand Mahindra slams Covid, Uday Kotak had lump in his throat on hearing about singer’s death

The demise of India's Nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar, has left the entire nation voiceless.

As the country mourned her death on Sunday, a number of tributes poured in for the Melody Queen. Corporate India honoured the legacy of the late 92-year-old playback singer in their special way.

Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra Group, said he was speechless. He used just one sentence to describe the emotion of the entire nation, "What can you say when you no longer have your voice…?"



In another tweet, the billionaire said he hated Covid as it did its worst while leaving. "Covid, you did your worst while leaving. Stole our voice. I hate you," his caption read. Mangeshkar was admitted to the hospital after she contracted Covid-19 earlier last month.


Snapdeal founder Kunal Bahl said the future generations will not be fortunate enough to listen to Mangeshkar's songs live. "No artist has been or will be an integral part of so many generations of India," he added.

Uday Kotak, CEO, Kotak Mahindra Bank, called Mangeshkar India’s favourite voice. Alongside a vintage picture of the singer, he wrote, "Nostalgia with moist eyes and lump in the throat."


Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said that Lata Didi represented India by lending her incomparable voice to songs in 36 languages.

"The voice, the charm, the melodies will live on for generations to come. There can be no greater tribute to our unity than Lata Didi... She will be missed by billions."

Anil Agarwal, Executive Chairman at Vedanta Resources, took a trip down the memory lane. He remembered the time he travelled to Banaras from Patna in a train to watch the first day-last show of the movies that featured Mangeshkar's songs.

"She will always remain immortal in hearts, inspiring generations to come. Millions of fans, condolences to the family," he added.


Biocon Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw spent the day listening to Mangeshkar's song 'Tu Jahan Jahan Chalega' from the 1966 film 'Mera Saaya'. She said, "Mangeshkar will eternally cast her large shadow over us and remind us of her eternal legend."


Radhika Gupta, MD and CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, remembered Mangeshkar as magical, timeless and excellent. She also said she had goosebumps listening to Mangeshkar singing 'Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo' for the first sang in 1963



In a series of tweets, RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka said that the timeless and eternal Mangeshkar was family to him. He said he was feeling numb that a member of his family is no more. He said he was haunted by the endless memories of her laughter and long chats they had at his residence in Mumbai.

"If there is a God, hers is the voice. And it will always be singing in our hearts. An era ends!," he added.



In another tweet, he wrote, "Feels like the voice of our Country is silenced!"


In a statement to news agency PTI, leading NRI businessman GP Hinduja said that the death of the singing legend was not only a big loss to Bollywood but to the entire musical world.

The Hinduja Group of Industries Co-Chairman, who attended the Royal Albert Hall concert of Mangeshkar in 1974, said, "she made India popular globally."

"The Hinduja brothers and the entire family always admired Lata ji," he said.

Mangeshkar, known as the Nightingale of India, holds the distinction of being the first Indian artist ever to perform live at London's iconic Royal Albert Hall in 1974.

"Lata Mangeshkar, recipient of India's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna, has been the nightingale and pride of India. We knew her well from RK (Raj Kapoor) days. It is a big loss not only to Bollywood but the entire musical world," Hinduja said.

NRI entrepreneur Kartar Lalvani described Mangeshkar as a unique singer who united Indians through her melodious songs.

"She was one of the greatest and most influential singers in India. Her melodious songs touched not only Indians but transcended beyond the borders," said Lalvani, Founder-Chairman of Vitabiotics, Britain No.1 manufacturer of Vitamins.

Lata Mangeshkar was born in 1929 in Indore. She was the eldest daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar, a Marathi musician and a theater actor. A lesser-known fact about the singing legend is that Mangeshkar’s family’s last name used to be Hardikar but her father changed it to Mangeshkar in order to identify with his family’s native town, Mangeshi, in Goa.
