A Delhi-based gastro specialist has sparked a nationwide rethink on gut health trends after calling out the growing obsession with probiotic pills. In a recent video, Dr Anshuman Kaushal, a Surgical Gastroenterology Specialist and known online as @theangry_doc, questioned whether consumers are being misled into spending heavily on capsules that offer little benefit without the right support system. His viral remarks were highlighted in an Instagram post captioned “They Are Lying To You: Prebiotics vs Probiotics. The Truth No Brand Wants Printed.”

The Trend Everyone Is Buying, But Few Understand

From gummies to capsules, probiotic products have exploded across India’s wellness market, promising “gut happiness” and instant fixes. But Dr Kaushal says the hype hides a basic scientific truth. In the video, cited from his Instagram post, he explains that most people believe probiotics work like magic potions, even though their symptoms remain unchanged and their wallets get lighter.

He clarifies that probiotics and prebiotics are not interchangeable gut boosters. Instead, he compares them to landlords and tenants, arguing that probiotics cannot survive or function in the gut without the right fiber rich environment.

Probiotics Alone Will Not Save Your Gut

According to the information shared by Dr Kaushal in the Instagram video, probiotics are live bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. They help only in specific scenarios like post antibiotic recovery, certain diarrheal illnesses and irritable bowel syndrome. He stresses that not all probiotics are equal and that strain specific use matters far more than generic gummies marketed with feel good slogans.

He warns that many bacteria in probiotic supplements do not survive stomach acid, making blind consumption ineffective.

Prebiotics That Keep Your Microbiome Alive

Dr Kaushal emphasises that prebiotics, which come from non digestible fibers, are the real drivers of a stable gut environment. Citing examples such as onions, bananas, garlic, oats, wheat bran and potatoes, he notes that these foods act as fuel for the beneficial bacteria already living in the intestines.

He adds in the video report that relying solely on probiotics is like inviting tenants without providing electricity, water or beds. Without fiber, the bacteria simply cannot stay.

Why Big Brands Stay Silent About Fiber

In the video, Dr Kaushal points out that companies promoting probiotics rarely highlight the importance of prebiotic foods because fiber does not generate the same profits that packaged capsules do. He urges viewers to prioritise real food over supplements and aim for 20 to 25 grams of daily fiber for a healthier microbiome.

He also lists simple combinations that nourish gut health naturally, such as banana with curd, oats with yogurt, potatoes with dahi, and salads paired with fermented pickles.

With over 24 years of experience, Dr Kaushal is a seasoned minimal access, robotic and laparoscopic surgeon. His message, amplified through the Instagram, is a reminder that gut health cannot be outsourced to pills. Instead, it depends on consistent dietary habits grounded in fiber rich foods.
