A recent Digital Wellness Report by NortonLifeLock found that children and parents share similar behaviours when it comes to mobile gaming.
From online classes to checking in with their friends via social media to online gaming, rules around kids' screen time seem to have evaporated during the recent lockdown. Surprisingly, kids weren’t the only age group to see a spike in increased screen use during the lockdown.

A recent Digital Wellness Report by NortonLifeLock (that surveyed 1,572 city-based Indian adults) found that children and parents share similar behaviours when it comes to mobile gaming. 59 per cent of respondents surveyed said they spent roughly the same amount of time playing games online as their children while another 24 per cent confessed to spending more time playing games online than their children.

“It is interesting to note that children follow the same patterns as their parents when it comes to online gaming,” said Ritesh Chopra, Director, NortonLifeLock, India.

GenX dominates online gaming
About 92 per cent of Gen X respondents surveyed (those born between 1965 and 1980) considered online gaming to be the best pastime. In comparison, only 88 per cent of millennials and 81 per cent of Gen Z respondents (those born after 1997) felt the same. 65 per cent of Gen X respondents were willing to skip their meals, sleep and other activities as opposed to 55 per cent of millennials and 38 per cent of Gen Z respondents.

However, when it came to social interactions or going outdoors, 68 per cent of Gen Z respondents said they preferred online games to social interactions or going outdoors, while only 62 per cent of Gen X respondents and 64 per cent of millennials felt the same.

Interestingly, the report also found that women were more likely to spend time gaming online as compared to men. 88 per cent of female respondents considered online games to be the best pastime as compared to 86 per cent of males. 61 per cent of female respondents were willing to skip meals, sleep and other activities for online games, as compared to 45 per cent of male counterparts.
