Rajat Deshpande shares what keeps his body, mind and soul healthy.
Being healthy physically is a core part of FinBox CEO Rajat Deshpande's regimen and personal goals. Following fitness routines helps him be centered and allows for that off-time from continuously thinking about work while also ensuring that he stay healthy.

"On most days, I run and do push-ups and I find that it helps me be regular with exercising and ensuring that I stay connected to myself. Apart from this, I also follow a strict eating and dietary regimen which largely involves eating fresh produce and maintaining a calorie deficit," he says.

Work out
Deshpande tends to run and exercise at either 7 am in the mornings or around 4 pm in the evenings for about 45-60 minutes.

"This is a time when I find that I have the mind space and the outside weather is conducive to exercising. I tend to follow intermittent fasting. So I start my day with a black coffee and lots of fruits. My meals largely involve basic home-cooked food that’s non-oily and non-spicy. I also eat a lot of homegrown organic greens such as kale and lettuce that help detoxify the body," he says.

He has a strong meditative practice that he has nurtured for many years now. "I found that spiritual health is as important as physical health. I started with Vipassana retreats which I do at least once a year. Along with this, I often meditate during the day and practice deep state meditation. Even when I am stressed, I tend to meditate wherever I am for about five to 10 minutes and that helps calm the mind quite a bit. I use meditation both strategically and tactically. I am an avid user of the app Headspace too and recommend the book Waking Up by Sam Harris to everyone. When I find myself stressed or conflicted, I tend to take a lot of notes and write in my notebooks which help me clear my head," he says.

Mind map
Deshpande thinks it’s more to do with how much you eat. "I find that eating fewer quantities helps keep me sharper and more agile both physically and mentally. I practice gratitude and tend to reflect on all the good in my life and around me and feel thankful for the same. I am also very empathetic and I find that empathy helps one become more charitable and giving comes naturally," he says.

“I decided to use this opportunity to improve my physical conditioning. I started cycling (after more than 40 years) inside my gated community from mid-April. I went from seven kilometres per ride to 20 kilometres by the end of June. Recently, I did a 52-kilometre ride to Chikka Tirupathi [on the outskirts of Bengaluru]. Cycling has had a huge impact, not just on my physical conditioning but also my confidence.”

“Startups are quite demanding, so I’ve never been able to work out more than three days a week, even when I trained for the Ironman Triathlon. So, when the lockdown was announced, I decided to challenge myself with a ‘consistency goal’ of accomplishing a workout a day. It began with coordinated workouts on Zoom with my friends and as restrictions eased, I started going for outdoor runs. There were days when there would be so many calls that I’d be seen climbing the building stairs at 10 pm. I now have more than 100 days of workouts under my belt and it has been the biggest stressbuster.”

“During the lockdown, I have managed to master single-leg burpees. It’s important to have a defined schedule and stick to it. I ensure that I block out some time during the day for exercise. I work out at home daily with various bodyweight exercises — I do pushups, burpees and air squats. I love doing CrossFit and high-intensity interval training that combines weightlifting, aerobics, powerlifting and gymnastics.”
