Sudish Panicker shares the books he reads and how they help him get better
Sudish Panicker, MD and Head, BNY Mellon India, has read so many books during the lockdown that it is hard to keep a count.

"However, two among the many, that have been my favorites are - 'The Goal' by Eliyahu Goldratt and 'The Attacker’s Advantage' by Ram Charan. 'The Power of Inherent Simplicity' is a good way to look at the most complicated situations is to seek and break out the simple cores that form them. 'Building Perceptual Acuity' is your human radar of seeing through the fog of uncertainty and to act before others. Most recently, I have also been reading some industry reports around innovation in AI, the spurt in patents during the last four quarters in India. A good reminder that a growth mindset helps seek out the best and accelerate change in times of adversity," he says.

Panicker spends an average of one to two hours every day, dedicated to focused reading. "But sometimes, I do indulge in less intense reading when I can steal a window of 20-30 minutes by spacing work and personal schedules which can be tricky on many weekdays," he says.

Reading helps Panicker in two different ways. First and foremost, reading helps him detach completely from the present chores. "It takes me to a different space altogether – far from everything happening around me. Furthermore, I often find that reading enlightens me with some practices, learnings and approaches that I can apply in my personal situations. I’m also often able to connect the learnings of a book back to our work scenarios and sometimes also share these with my colleagues to inspire them," he says.

Panicker enjoys both formats - physical and online reading. "I am more comfortable reading from an e-book if it is a short read. However, if it’s anything more than 25 pages, I would rather prefer a physical book that I can touch, feel, carry around and read as I like. I feel a slight disconnect if I am not flipping the pages and experiencing the book in a wholesome, sensory manner," he says.
