NEW DELHI: Cricketers have overtaken Bollywood in terms of celebrity advertising ranking, according to new data by TAM Media’s AdEx India, mapping top 10 most visible celebrity-endorsed ads.
While India captain Virat Kohli has been consistent at No 1 slot through this year, in the past two months of July and August, MS Dhoni who was at No 8 in June has moved to the second slot, overtaking Bollywood actors including Amitabh Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor.
Dhoni endorses close to 30 brands including Oppo, Gulf Oil, Sunfeast, TVS and MasterCard.
The report by AdeEx said on average, ad volumes per day for celebrity-endorsed ads grew 9% in August ’20 compared to the previous month. Kohli topped with 7% share of ad volumes followed by Dhoni.

The report said volumes of celebrity endorsed ads dropped by 16% overall in July, compared to the same month in the previous year. In the preceding months of April-June, celebrity endorsed ads fell by 39% over the previous three month period of January-March ’20.

Industry executives attributed the drop in Bollywood visibility to a combination of factors including backlash by masses over actor Sushant Singh’s suicide, the anti-China sentiment which has made brands wary of showing celebs endorsing Chinese products, and the Covid-induced nationwide lockdown since March which had brought shoots to a standstill.
Brands associated with Dhoni said they will continue with him despite his retirement. Hotels and consumer goods company ITC divisional chief executive (foods division) Hemant Malik said: “Sunfeast’s association with Dhoni will continue. He cuts across ages and boundaries and has universal appeal.”
On August 16, Dhoni, former India captain, announced his retirement from international cricket. He holds the record as India’s most successful captain in limited-over internationals, with three ICC trophies - 2007 T20 World Cup, 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the 2013 ICC?Champions Trophy. Dhoni, 39, is presently in Dubai to lead IPL T20 team Chennai Super Kings.
