CAA outrage: Konkona, Shabana stand with protesters; Anurag Kashyap tweets #Emergency2019

The protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) escalated on Thursday with students demonstrating across universities in Bangalore, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram among other places.

The latest celebs to show their support for the students and stand in solidarity with protesters are actresses Konkona Sensharma and Shabana Azmi.

Konkona sent out a tweet urging protesters to neither be silent nor violent.



Veteran actress Shabana Azmi, too, sent out a video, quoting poetry by lyricist Javed Akhtar, and saying "the government shouldn't try to suppress our voice".


Director and producer Anurag Kashyap who has been vocal about the CAA in the past, retweeted Azmi's tweet and compared the situation to the Emergency.


Earlier in the morning, Priyanka Chopra, who has been vocal on several political issues, sent out a tweet talking about how every student has a voice in a democracy and for the voices to be met with violence is wrong.

“Education is every child’s dream. Education is what empowered them to think independently”, Chopra wrote.


The 37-year-old, who is the UN Ambassador for Peace, emphasised that in a thriving democracy, everyone has the right to raise their voice peacefully and to be met with violence for that was wrong.

Former Indian cricketer and spin bowler Harbhajan Singh, too, took a strong stand on the microblogging site, sending out a tweet urging students, police and authorities to stop resorting to violence.


The 39-year-old had also tweeted out a video of a young student named Minajuddin who had lost one eye on Sunday when the clashes between Jamia students and the police intensified.

Actress and television personality Gauahar Khan, too, sent out a video of her jamming to the song ‘Azadi’ from the film ‘Gully Boy’, showing solidarity with the protesters happening in Mumbai.
