The Microsoft CEO shared tips with the new top boss at Starbucks, Kevin Johnson, about stepping into the shoes of a famous founder.
Kevin Johnson, the CEO of Starbucks, has a big – make it venti — challenge ahead of him. He soon takes full charge of the company from Howard Schultz, its illustrious chairman and frontman.
According to The New York Times, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who is a board member at the coffee chain, has spoken to Johnson “about what it means to succeed a legendary founder”.

Nadella knows what that is like. He became Microsoft’s third chief executive after Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates. In fact, Johnson too has a background in technology and used to work at Mircrosoft.
“I shared the best advice I got from Steve and Bill,” Nadella said in an interview. “It was: ‘Don’t try to be us. Don’t try to fill our shoes’. He’s not Howard. But at the same time, he’s learned a lot from Howard.”
Nadella joined the board of Starbucks in January 2017. He was appointed for his “invaluable insight in international operations and distribution” and his potential to improve the tech focus of the company.
Johnson, a skin cancer survivor, is a tech savvy and data driven person, unlike Schultz, who was known to be more instinctive. Johnson is stepping out of Schultz’s shadow only now, but he has already been the CEO for more than a year. In this period, he has gradually transitioned into the role of the boss. And if he needs some counsel again, all he has to do is meet Nadella over a cup of coffee.
