Anil Kumble turns 49: BCCI does a rewind, cricket stars tweet b'day greetings for their 'role model'

During the 2002 Antigua Test between India and West Indies, Anil Kumble bowled with a broken jaw.
Legendary bowler Anil Kumble turned 49 on Thursday, and his fans and colleagues from the field are pouring love for him on social media. On Twitter, thousands of greetings poured in for the former coach who till date is remembered as one of the greatest bowlers of all time.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India, on its official Twitter handle, wished the legend with a video rounding up his most-iconic moments on the field. During the 2002 Antigua Test between India and West Indies, Kumble bowled with a broken jaw. His courage and dedication to the game was hailed in the video. Even today, the legend's determination is remembered.




The International Cricket Council did not stay behind and posted a throwback picture of a happy Kumble on the pitch.



Cricketer-turned politician Gautam Gambhir termed Kumble the biggest match-winner for the country and thanked him for being an inspiration for the generations of cricketers to come.

Gambhir's opening partner Sehwag won over fans with a birthday post for his senior. The former batsman called Kumble a 'terrific' role model and apologised for depriving the legend of his second century in The Oval Test against England in 2007.


Former cricketer Vinod Kambli, while sharing a picture with Kumble, cheered his friend for his 'never say never' attitude.

Harbhajan Singh, too, tweeted a birthday greeting for his bowling partner and guru. VVS Laxman wished Kumble a great year ahead.

Others who wished Kumble were Cheteshwar Pujara, Mohammad Kaif and Suresh Raina.

As the shortlisted names of the candidates for the top job of the men's team coach are out, Ravi Shastri as incumbent is again in the mix.
