Akshay Kumar donates Rs 1cr towards Assam flood relief, CM Sonowal thanks actor

NEW DELHI: The monsoon showers this year have been brutal for Assam.

Social media was filled with pictures of the helpless wild animals roaming the streets after the rising water level led to floods in the Kaziranga National Park, one of the well-known wildlife sanctuaries in India. Millions of people have also been affected and displaced after their homes were washed away in the deluge.

Like last year, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar turned hero for the people of Assam with his donation of Rs 1 crore towards flood relief.


The state Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, took to Twitter on Tuesday to thank the superstar for his generous contribution.

He further praised Kumar for showing 'sympathy and support' during the period of crisis.


Last month, international icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her singer-husband Nick Jonas donated an undisclosed amount for Bihar and Assam flood relief. The couple, who had earlier donated to various organisations in India and the US, to help fight against the coronavirus pandemic, urged fans to extend support to the disaster-struck states.

Chopra, who served as the ambassador for Assam from 2016 to 2019, said the state has been "devastated" by the floods.

"Nick and I have already donated to a few organizations whose teams are engaged in active relief and rehabilitation work in the state. Now it's your turn," she had written in an Instagram Story.

On August 2, it was reported that Assam's flood situation has significantly improved.

The respite in the monsoon rains since July 24 lay behind the improvement in the flood situation in Assam and other northeastern states, India Meteorological Department officials said.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials said that nine lakh people in 1,087 villages continue to be distressed, though the number has dropped since July 24, when over 28 lakh people in 2,543 villages of 26 districts were affected.
