A quick look at the history of the floundering Grasshoppers, that was once Switzerland’s most successful soccer club.

Relegation from the top league was the final insult to injury for what has been a horror story of a season for Switzerland’s most successful football club, Grasshoppers. Only five wins in 36 games, two called off after desperate fans turned to hooliganism, three coaches in a single season and being homeless for 12 years — the picture has been far from perfect for Grasshoppers. Last month, the club’s fans demanded that the players hand in their T-shirts and crawl back to the dressing room.

However, the story wasn’t always this tragic. Yes, they are no Manchester United or Barcelona, but here’s a look at why this 132-year-old football club deserves more respect than it is currently getting:

1. History and legacy: The most popular part of the multi-sports club, Grasshopper Club Zurich (GCZ), Grasshoppers is the oldest football team in Zurich. The GCZ also competes in other professional sports like tennis, field hockey, basketball, squash, rugby, ice hockey, curling and rowing, among others.

The Grasshoppers maintain a traditional rivalry with FC Zurich. Ironically, Grasshoppers have been playing at the Letzigrund Athletics Stadium, home ground of their rivals ever since their own, Hardturm Ground, was shut down in 2007.

2. English roots: The club was founded in 1886 by a group of English students from Manchester.

3. Origin of name: While it remains unknown, many attribute it to the players’ post-goal unique celebrations in the early days.

4. Most successful: What probably makes relegation most heart-breaking for Grasshoppers is the fact that it has won the Swiss Super League the most number of times with 27 titles. Its 19 victories in the Swiss Cup competition is also more than any other competing club. Its last league title came in 2003 and the Swiss Cup was last won in 2013.

5. European performance: The Grasshoppers were the first Swiss team to feature in the UEFA Champions League in the 1995-96 season. But they couldn’t move beyond the round games. The Grasshoppers had a slightly better show the following season, when they qualified for the league again. The club’s biggest European success to date was their run till the 1977-78 UEFA Cup semi-finals.
