Fit & fab at 57: Lothar Matthaus used his designing skills on the football field

Matthaus is a certified interior designer as well.

Lothar Matthaus, who captained Germany to World Cup victory in 1990, had studied to become an interior designer. “I got my certification in it. If I was not a footballer, I had the passion to do design,” Matthaus said during an interaction with reporters in Mumbai recently.

“When I was 17 or 18 I did not imagine that I would have a career like I did, so I got my diploma. Luckily I played professional football. I guess I was a good designer on the field (gesticulating with his hands to indicate football moves).”

He certainly did. Matthaus was at his best at the 1990 world cup, scoring four goals and making some.

Though 57, Matthaus is fit and youthful. He was wearing Dolce & Gabbana jeans and black sneakers when he visited The Times of India office in Mumbai. It appears his eye still glows for a bit of design.
