Missing 10 year old’s body recovered after Iowa school field trip tragedy, teacher and student identified; what we know so far

The body of a missing juvenile student was retrieved from a reservoir in Iowa on Wednesday, September 23, one day after the dead body of a 24 year old teacher was found during a field trip to school. The two victims have been identified.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release that first responders recovered the juvenile from the Coralville Reservoir at 1:24 p.m. on September 23. He was identified as Ahmed Osman, 10, of Iowa City.

The adult victim recovered from the reservoir on Tuesday was identified as Hannah Jorgensen, 24, of Tiffin. Jorgensen was a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary in Iowa City, as per the school’s website.



The unfortunate event took place on Tuesday at Lake MacBride State Park, close to the Coralville Reservoir spillway. According to the sheriff’s department, they were called at around 12:10 p.m. for a case involving people in the water. By 12:43 p.m., rescuers found Jorgensen at the reservoir, and she was declared “dead at the scene.”

Crews then searched for the missing child throughout the evening. Recovery efforts were suspended overnight before resuming the next morning.

The Iowa City Community School District said the incident occurred during a Borlaug Elementary fifth-grade School of the Wild field trip at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area. The district confirmed that both Jorgensen and Osman died as a result of the accident.

The school district termed the accident a “tragic accident” and said Jorgensen and Osman “were deeply valued members of our school district community” and that their deaths were being felt throughout Borlaug Elementary and the wider district.

Norman Borlaug Elementary School issued a statement on facebook with gratitude “for the incredible outpouring of support we have received.”

“Our building is hurting right now, and so are our hearts,” the statement read. “But knowing that you are all here for us, standing beside us, checking in, and, lifting us up. It means more than we can put into words. We are so grateful for our community and for each and every one of you.”

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said the incident remains under investigation and that there was no further information available for release.

Several agencies assisted with the search and recovery efforts, including the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa State Patrol, US Army Corps of Engineers and University of Iowa emergency response teams.
