Picture this. A forester in western Spain checks one pine tree. It looks sick. A lab test comes back positive for a microscopic worm. Officials don't wait around. They cut down every vulnerable pine tree in a 3-kilometer circle around that single tree. It sounds extreme. But according to an official 2010 report from the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization, that 2008 outbreak near Cáceres, in Spain's Extremadura region, was fully wiped out.

A worm you've probably never heard of
The pest has a mouthful of a name: Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, or the pine wood nematode. According to a plant pathology lesson from the American Phytopathological Society, this worm is only about one millimeter long, roughly the width of a pencil tip. You'd never spot it with your bare eyes. It clogs up a tree's internal water pipes, and the tree slowly loses its ability to drink. Within weeks or months, it wilts and dies. There's no cure once it's inside a tree.

The worm can't travel on its own. It hitchhikes a ride inside a beetle called the pine sawyer. As the beetle flies around chewing on young shoots, it drops worms off in new trees along the way.

How one tree turned into a 3-kilometer emergency
The nematode was first found by Spanish officials in a single pine in Sierra de Dios Padre, near Cáceres, in 2008. It was the first recorded case of this pest in Spain. They destroyed all susceptible pine trees within a 3-kilometer radius of that one tree and conducted intensive surveys across forests, wood plants, and nurseries throughout the country. No subsequent tests found the nematode near Cácere. That outbreak was declared over.

The story didn't end there
In 2025, the same EPPO reporting database was updated to show that the nematode has since been found in three Spanish provinces, bringing the total number of infestation reports since 2008 to ten, and with four outbreaks still active today.

In Galicia, the pest was found near Pontevedra back in 2010. By 2024, surveyors had identified over 150 infected pines and 168 infected beetles in that zone alone. It became so widespread that by February 2025 Galician authorities decided full eradication was no longer realistic and switched to containing it instead, in a redrawn zone with a 20-kilometer buffer. In September 2024 another outbreak occurred in Galicia, probably having spread naturally from neighboring Portugal.

In Castilla y León there was an isolated case in Lagunilla, province of Salamanca, in 2018. More infected trees were found in 2021, 2023 and again in 2024 when 16 more trees tested positive. They are still trying to get rid of the disease there.

By 2019, the nematode had appeared again in Extremadura, but this time in a separate location, near the Portuguese border and unrelated to the original Cáceres site, and in January 2023 a second infected tree was confirmed there.

A study titled ‘Molecular Characterization and Development of Real-Time PCR Assay for Pine-Wood Nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Nematoda: Parasitaphelenchidae),’ published in PLOS ONE, found that the pine wood nematode is native to North America, including the United States, Canada and Mexico. It has been present in North America for a long time, living among native pines that have developed some tolerance to it. Pines in Asia and Europe never stood a chance. It got a ride to a new home overseas on wood shipments in the early 1900s, first reaching Japan. It later spread to Portugal in 1999 and to Spain in 2008, becoming a killer in forests that had never met it before.

So, is your backyard pine safe?
Mostly, yes. According to Colorado State University Extension, pine wilt disease does show up in the US, but it mostly hits ornamental, non-native pines such as Scots, Austrian, and Japanese black pine, the sort you'd find in yards and parks. Native species tend to do much better.

The bigger picture for all of us
Spain’s original win in 2008 was not the end of the fight, and it is still ongoing today across three provinces. That's the point here. Invasive pests are a moving target, and every win is buying time, not a permanent fix. But that feels a lot closer to home for US readers. Global trade and a warming climate are often linked to pests turning up in new places, whether it's this nematode, the emerald ash borer, or the next unknown hitchhiker in a shipping container. Even if the response seems aggressive, acting quickly on the first case remains an important tool.
