What makes us human

In cricket, football or hockey, merit and performance determine a player's place in the team. Such competition is accepted because the objective is collective excellence and the pursuit of victory. But can the same principle of replacement be applied to human life?

In government, business, engineering, manufacturing and construction, AI is increasingly performing tasks once carried out by human beings. It can process enormous amounts of information, recognise patterns and assist in decision-making with remarkable speed. Yet, efficiency cannot become the only measure of human worth.

A robot may reproduce a mother's actions, but it cannot recreate the sacred bond between a mother and her newborn through programming alone. A machine may analyse suffering, but human compassion is not simply an algorithm. It arises from consciousness, experience and the heart.


AI itself is a creation of human intelligence. Therefore, we must remain responsible for what they create. Intelligence without wisdom can become dangerous; power without responsibility can become destructive.

The question becomes even more profound in governance. A democratic nation cannot be governed by calculations and data alone. Governance involves justice, compassion, accountability, dissent, human dignity and the freedom to make moral choices. These are not merely technical problems awaiting an algorithmic solution. AI can advise humanity, but it should not become humanity's conscience. Perhaps the future is a partnership in which machines perform, while we preserve what makes us human.
