The last few minutes before falling asleep may seem like a small part of the day, but psychology suggests that the emotional state you carry into the night can interact with the way your brain processes memories. Sleep is not simply a period when the brain switches off. During sleep, recently learned information is reorganized and consolidated, helping some memories become more stable and easier to retrieve later. Another useful psychological concept is mood-congruent memory, associated with research by psychologist Gordon Bower. The basic idea is that a person's current emotional state can make memories with a similar emotional tone easier to access.

Someone feeling sad may find it easier to recall disappointing experiences, while someone feeling positive may more readily remember pleasant events.

This does not mean mood permanently changes memories. Instead, mood can influence retrieval, or which memories come to mind most easily at a particular moment.

That distinction matters because remembering something more easily does not necessarily mean the memory itself has become more accurate.

A good night's sleep does more than preserve memories

Scientists increasingly view sleep as an active period of brain processing. Research by Jessica Payne and Elizabeth Kensinger found evidence that sleep can change the neural systems involved in retrieving emotional memories.

At the same time, researchers caution against oversimplifying the science. A 2019 meta-analysis of 31 studies found no overall sleep-specific advantage for emotional over neutral memories, although certain experimental conditions produced stronger effects. A separate meta-analysis also found that the evidence for selective emotional-memory benefits from sleep is mixed.

So the better conclusion is not that your bedtime mood determines tomorrow's memories. Instead, mood, emotional arousal, attention and sleep all interact with the brain's memory systems.

If you end the day upset, it may help to give your mind some space before sleep rather than repeatedly replaying the stressful event. A calm bedtime routine cannot guarantee better memories, but protecting sleep and reducing unnecessary emotional stimulation can support the brain processes involved in memory and emotional regulation.
