E20 petrol FAQs: Govt clarifies impact on older vehicles, mileage and warranties

The Centre on Thursday issued a detailed clarification on the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme, rebutting what it called misleading claims circulating on social media about E20 fuel damaging engines, reducing mileage and making older vehicles unusable.

In a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs), the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the clarifications are based on scientific studies, industry data and real-world operating experience, adding that no verified evidence has emerged linking E20 fuel to widespread engine failures or systemic vehicle damage.

India's ethanol blending programme has gradually increased from around 1.5% in 2013-14 to 20% during November 2025-June 2026, with the government saying the rollout followed consultations with automobile manufacturers, testing agencies and oil marketing companies.

Can vehicles manufactured before 2023 run on E20 petrol?

Government's answer: Yes.

The ministry said E15-plus petrol has been in widespread use for over three-and-a-half years, while E19-E20 fuel has been used for more than two-and-a-half years without any verified evidence of widespread engine failures caused by ethanol blending.

It cited service data from a leading automaker, which serviced 2.84 crore vehicles in FY26, including around 1.5 crore vehicles not originally certified as E20-compatible, and reported no E20-related corrosion, abnormal wear or reduction in component life. Another manufacturer tracked 1.4 crore E20-operated vehicles over an extended period and similarly found no evidence of ethanol-induced corrosion.

Will E20 make older vehicles unusable?

Government's answer: No.

According to the ministry, more than 20 crore two-wheelers and over 3 crore petrol cars have already operated on higher ethanol blends without any verified evidence of widespread breakdowns or engine failures linked to E20.

It said that if E20 had rendered older vehicles unusable, India would have seen millions of breakdowns, warranty claims and service campaigns, which has not happened.

Does E20 petrol significantly reduce mileage?

Government's answer: No.

The ministry said any reduction in fuel economy for certain older vehicles designed for E10 fuel is generally limited to 3-5%. It added that mileage depends on several factors, including driving habits, traffic conditions, tyre pressure, vehicle maintenance and air-conditioner usage.

It also said E20 offers a higher octane rating, improved anti-knock characteristics and cleaner combustion.

Are automobile companies being forced to support E20?

Government's answer: No.

The ministry said automakers are independent listed companies and would not continue honouring warranties if they believed E20 caused systemic engine damage.

It cited a joint press conference on July 4 where executives from Maruti Suzuki, Toyota Kirloskar, Hero MotoCorp, Hyundai Motor India, TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto publicly backed the E20 programme after extensive testing. According to the government, the companies reiterated that they had not found evidence of E20-related engine damage in their service records.

The ministry said ethanol-blended petrol supplied in India conforms to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications and is subject to quality checks throughout the supply chain.
