E-commerce and streaming platforms are merging to boost customer loyalty and transactions. Flipkart and Netflix launched India's first e-commerce and streaming platform partnership. Eligible Flipkart Plus members receive a Netflix Mobile Plan af...
The convergence comes as both online shopping and video streaming continue to expand rapidly in India. The country's OTT audience reached 601.2 million in 2025, including 148.2 million active paid subscriptions, according to the Ormax OTT Audience Report 2025.
India's e-retail market grew 19-21% to $65-66 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $170-180 billion by 2030, according to Bain & Company and Flipkart's How India Shops Online 2026 report. The study found Gen Z accounts for 40-45% of online shoppers, making the cohort a key target for digital platforms.

Until now, streaming platforms in India have largely relied on telecom operators, broadband providers and pay-TV distributors to acquire subscribers through bundled offerings. The emerging model instead links entertainment with shopping behaviour, enabling streamers to reach new audiences while giving e-commerce companies another tool to boost engagement and purchase frequency.
The trend gathered pace with Flipkart and Netflix announcing India's first partnership between an e-commerce marketplace and a streaming platform. Under the tie-up, eligible Flipkart Plus members will receive Netflix's Mobile Plan, worth Rs 149 a month, after completing four qualifying purchases of at least Rs 299 each in a calendar month. The benefit goes live on August 1, positioning premium entertainment as a shopping reward rather than a conventional subscription bundle.
Qualifying purchases can be made across Flipkart, Flipkart Grocery and Flipkart Minutes. After the fourth eligible order, customers unlock a 30-day Netflix Mobile Plan through the Flipkart app at no additional cost. The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the partnership.
Ravi Iyer, CFO and senior vice president, Strategic Partnerships at Flipkart, said the programme differs from traditional entertainment bundles because it is integrated with shopping behaviour.
"Most entertainment partnerships have happened through telecom bundling or other add-ons. This is a first-of-its-kind programme integrated with shopping behaviour," Iyer said, adding that the initiative is designed to reward loyal shoppers while increasing engagement across Flipkart's platforms.
He said India's mobile-first consumer base increasingly uses the same device for shopping and entertainment, making such partnerships a natural extension of changing consumer behaviour, particularly among Gen Z users.
For Netflix, the collaboration offers another channel to reach consumers beyond its direct subscription business.
Laurent Uguen, vice president, APAC Partnerships-Business Development at Netflix, said the partnership combines Netflix's entertainment offering with Flipkart's reach to deliver greater value to consumers.
"Commerce and entertainment are coming together. We bring the entertainment, Flipkart brings the reach, and consumers benefit from that combination," Uguen said.

While Amazon has long used Prime Video to strengthen its Prime membership ecosystem, the Flipkart-Netflix tie-up is the first between an e-commerce marketplace and a streaming platform in India. Elsewhere, JioHotstar recently partnered with Swiggy to let viewers order food without leaving a live cricket stream during the India-England series, while YouTube has expanded shoppable advertising through creators and influencers.
Speaking at Reliance Industries' first-quarter earnings call, JioStar Sports CEO Ishan Chatterjee said the Swiggy partnership marked the company's first foray into commerce by enabling viewers to complete transactions without leaving the content stream.
