Why is Ilhan Omar's marriage history under federal investigation and public scrutiny now? Here's what public records reveal about her relationships and divorce history

Ilhan Omar’s marriage history is facing renewed attention following a federal investigation involving her immigration records. A recent search of the Minnesota Democrat’s Washington home and a court filing have brought questions about her past marriages back into public discussion.

The scrutiny has also revived allegations about her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, which Omar has repeatedly denied was fraudulent. However, the available marriage timeline does not establish that Elmi was her brother or that the marriage involved immigration fraud. The information is taken from a report by Newsweek.

Why has Ilhan Omar’s marriage history returned to the spotlight?

Federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home on October 12. A subsequent court filing seeking to keep search warrant materials sealed referred to her as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar."

President Donald Trump called for Omar to resign on Thursday, pointing to the name discrepancy. "She used a fake name to be sworn in. I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress," he told supporters in Iowa.

Omar has described the Department of Justice investigation as partisan politics and called the DOJ "corrupt."

The controversy has renewed attention on her relationship with Elmi. Omar has denied allegations that he was her brother and that their marriage was linked to immigration fraud. The timeline and tax records alone do not prove those claims.

Ilhan Omar’s marriage timeline, from 2002 to 2020

Omar has said she and Ahmed Abdisalan Hirisi sought a marriage license in 2002 but did not complete a civil marriage. Instead, they married through their Muslim faith tradition. They had two children before separating in 2008.

On February 12, 2009, Omar legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in Hennepin County, according to marriage records. She has said their relationship ended in 2011 under their faith tradition, although they did not obtain a civil divorce at that time.

Omar reconciled with Hirisi in 2012, and they had a third child. During 2014 and 2015, the two filed joint federal tax returns even though they were not legally married to each other and Omar remained legally married to Elmi.

The Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board later reviewed the filings. Its final report said there was "an issue with her tax returns that needed to be corrected." Omar’s campaign maintained that her filings were "fully compliant with all applicable tax law."

What happened to Omar’s marriages after 2015?

Omar and Elmi’s civil divorce was finalized in December 2017. She legally married Hirisi in January 2018, after the divorce was completed. Public records therefore do not show her legally married to both men at the same time.

Omar filed for divorce from Hirisi due to an "irretrievable breakdown" of the marriage. The divorce was finalized in November 2019.

Omar later married political consultant Tim Mynett. Official documents show their wedding took place in Washington, D.C., on March 16, 2020, with both listed as divorced.
