How Much Veterans Receive For VA Disability Benefits
VA disability compensation is tax free monthly payments to veterans with physical or mental health conditions connected to their military service. More than six million veterans nationwide currently receive these benefits. The amount depends on a veteran's disability rating, which ranges from 10% to 100%, and the number of eligible dependents, among other qualifying circumstances.
The compensation rates are: a veteran with a 10% disability rating receives $180.42 per month. A veteran with a 50% rating receives $1,132.90, while someone rated 100% disabled with no dependents receives $3,938.58 per month.
Veterans with qualifying dependents may be eligible for additional compensation.
Will VA Disability Benefits Increase in 2027
The upcoming payment schedule comes as veterans look ahead to a potential increase in their monthly compensation. Social Security Administration has announced a 3.6% cost of living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. While for 2026, it was a 2.8%.VA disability compensation generally increases by the same percentage as Social Security benefits. However, the adjustment requires separate congressional legislation.
If approved, the higher VA rates would take effect on December 1, 2026, with the first payment reflecting the increase scheduled for December 31.
Veteran with a 100% disability rating and no dependents, a 3.6% increase would add $141.79 to the monthly payment, or approximately $1,701 over a year, according to Newsweek.
