Social Security COLA 2027 rises 3.6%: What retirees need to know before January payments
Retirees and other Social Security beneficiaries will receive bigger monthly payment in 2027 because the latest cost of living adjustment is set to raise benefits by 3.6%.

The adjustment is higher than the 2.8% increase in 2026. So on average, monthly Social Security retirement benefits are expected to rise by about $75, but the exact amount each person gets will depend on their current benefit. So some recipients will see a larger increase than others.

The higher payments will begin in January 2027 for Social Security beneficiaries. People receiving Supplemental Security Income will get their adjusted payments starting December 31, 2026.

Social Security COLA 2027: How Much Will Monthly Checks Increase Next Year

The 3.6% adjustment will raise benefits across eligible recipients, but the additional dollar amount will not be the same for everyone.

The estimated $75 monthly increase refers to the average change in retirement benefits. It does not mean every beneficiary will receive an extra $75 each month. The amount added to a person's payment will depend on how much they currently receive.

For retirees working out their budgets for 2027, that difference is important. The announced percentage offers a general idea of the increase, while the actual change will vary with each person's benefit amount.

When Will the 2027 Social Security Increase Start

The higher benefits will take effect in January 2027 for Social Security recipients.

SSI beneficiaries will receive their increased payments beginning December 31, 2026, because January 1 is a federal holiday. The adjustment changes the amount recipients receive, while their regular Social Security payment schedule remains in place.

How Does the 2027 COLA Compare With Previous Years

The 3.6% increase is larger than the 2.8% adjustment for 2026. And it is also the biggest annual increase since 2023 when beneficiaries received an 8.7% COLA.

The purpose of the annual adjustment is to help Social Security benefits keep pace with rising prices. SSA calculates the increase using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers and the index measures price changes across a range of goods and services. Under the program's rules, the COLA calculation is based on inflation data from the third quarter.

The 3.6% adjustment will provide a boost to Social Security benefits in 2027, although the size of that increase will differ from one recipient to another. The estimated $75 monthly gain is an average, not a guaranteed amount for every beneficiary.
