As per Social Security Administration, the cost of living adjustment (COLA) for 2026 is 2.8%. The next adjustment will be announced on October 14. So until the official 2027 rate is confirmed, any calculation using a projected percentage should be treated as an estimate.
Social Security COLA 2027 calculator: How to calculate your increase
Calculating a potential increase is straightforward. Multiply your current monthly benefit by the projected COLA percentage divided by 100. Add the result to your existing payment to estimate your new monthly benefit. For example, if the 2027 COLA were 3.5%, someone receiving $2,000 a month could estimate the increase as follows:
- Current monthly benefit: $2,000
- Hypothetical COLA: 3.5%
- Estimated monthly increase: $2,000 × 0.035 = $70
- Estimated new monthly benefit: $2,070
How much could your Social Security check increase in 2027
The amount added to a monthly payment depends on the benefit a person currently receives. The table below shows how different payments would change under estimated 3.5% COLA.
Why your actual Social Security increase may be different
Multiplying your current monthly benefit by a projected COLA percentage might be a good starting point. But it does not capture every step of the SSA's calculation. The agency applies the COLA to beneficiary's primary insurance amount (PIA). Which is based on the worker's earnings record. It then accounts for applicable benefit adjustments and rounding rules when determining the monthly payment.
The age at which someone claims retirement benefits can also affect the amount they receive. Medicare Part B premiums and other applicable deductions may further affect how much money ultimately reaches a beneficiary's bank account.
That is why a simple calculator can provide an estimate but cannot guarantee the exact amount of a person's next payment.
How the Social Security Administration calculates COLA
COLA is based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and CPI-W.So the SSA compares average CPI-W for July, August and September with the average for the same three months in the last year a COLA was determined. The percentage increase in the index determines the adjustment under the applicable formula.
The adjustment is intended to help Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation. If the relevant index does not increase, the formula does not provide a COLA.
