The payments are part of the state’s $1 billion Protecting Our Wallets Energy Rebate (POWER) program which is expected to reach 8.2 million New Yorkers. The state began mailing checks on September 21 and plans to continue through December this year. Hochul said, "Our energy rebate checks are just one of many ways we're helping families address rising costs," as quoted by 13 Wham.
Who Can Get a $100, $150 or $200 NY Energy Rebate Check
Eligible taxpayers don't have to apply because the amount residents get depends on their 2024 New York adjusted gross income and filing status.Joint filers and qualifying surviving spouses with income of $150,000 or less are eligible for $200. Those who have income above $150,000 but is not more than $300,000 qualify for $150. And single filers, heads of household and married taxpayers filing separately who have income of $150,000 or less qualify for $100.
The payments will happen automatically for taxpayers who meet the eligibility requirements. So residents don't have to submit a separate application or provide utility bills to demonstrate eligibility.
What Does NY POWER Eligibility Depend On
Residents must have filed a timely New York State resident income tax return for the 2024 tax year, reported income within the program’s limits and not been claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return for that year to qualify. They must also have been full-year New York residents in 2024. Part-year residents with New York-source income do not qualify.
As per New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, a 2024 return is timely if it was filed by April 15, 2025 or under a valid extension by October 15, 2025.

When Will the Remaining New York Energy Rebate Checks Arrive
The state plans to continue mailing POWER checks through December 2026, but it has not provided individual delivery dates. Mailings are not organized by ZIP code or region, so eligible residents may receive their checks at different times.Residents who have moved can update their address through their Individual Online Services account with the state.
NY Energy Rebate Checks Are Separate From Monthly Utility Discounts
The POWER rebate is separate from New York’s Energy Affordability Program, which provides monthly discounts on utility bills to eligible households.Hochul’s office said about 50,000 additional households had applied to utilities for those discounts since a statewide enrollment push began in mid-September, as per a 13 Wham report. The program already serves approximately 1 million households, while state officials estimate that another 2.5 million may qualify but remain unenrolled.
