What if you had invested $1,000 in Netflix stock 20 years ago? Here’s how much NFLX would be worth today
Netflix stock investment: A $1,000 investment in Netflix (NFLX) stock 20 years ago would be worth about $218,000, according to a Kiplinger analysis. But the gains came with steep sell-offs, rising content costs and growing competition. Here’s what...

A $1000 investment in Netflix (NFLX) made 20 years ago would be worth about $218,000, according to a recent calculation by Kiplinger. That would amount to roughly $217,000 in gains before taxes and trading costs.
The return is impressive, but the journey was not smooth. Netflix shares have suffered steep declines, and the company continues to spend billions to keep viewers watching as competition intensifies.
$1,000 in Netflix stock (NFLX) would have grown to about $218,000
Kiplinger estimated Netflix’s annualized return over the 20-year period at around 31%. By comparison, $1,000 invested in an S&P 500 exchange-traded fund would have grown to approximately $8,200, based on an annualized return of about 11%.The difference is substantial. The hypothetical Netflix investment would be worth more than 26 times the S&P 500 investment.
The comparison is not quite like-for-like. Netflix is a single stock, while an S&P 500 fund holds shares in a broad range of large US companies. The S&P 500 calculation also includes reinvested dividends, whereas Netflix does not pay regular dividends to shareholders.
The $218,000 figure is a historical estimate based on the period used in Kiplinger’s calculation. The exact value would depend on the purchase date and the date used to measure the investment.

Netflix (NFLX) shareholders had to weather some steep falls
The stock did not climb steadily over those 20 years. Netflix investors faced several sharp declines including periods when the shares lost a large portion of its value. As per the Kiplinger reported that Netflix had experienced three major drawdowns over the preceding 15 years with losses ranging from 45% to more than 80%. The publication also noted that the stock was nearly 50% below its June 2025 peak when its analysis appeared.
The episode showed how quickly sentiment can change when subscriber growth disappoints as investors who sold during a downturn would not have captured the full return reflected in the 20 year calculation.
Netflix is spending billions to keep viewers watching
Netflix needs a steady supply of films and television shows to keep audiences engaged and producing that content costs billions of dollars. The company spent about $17.1 billion on content in 2025 and expected that amount to reach $20 billion in 2026.
Competition is another challenge. Amazon, YouTube, Disney and Apple are all competing for viewers’ attention. So Netflix must continue to attract subscribers while making sure its spending supports revenue and profits.
In the firm's third quarter 2026 results released on October 20, Netflix reported revenue of $12.87 billion, up 12% from a year earlier. Operating income rose 37% to $4.46 billion. And its operating margin increased to 34.6%, compared with 28.2% in the same quarter of 2025.
Netflix forecast full year 2026 revenue of $51.1 billion which is 13% growth from 2025 and projected an operating margin of 31.5%. It also lowered its advertising revenue forecast for 2026 to approximately $2.7 billion from about $3 billion previously, citing a slower than expected rollout of some advertising features.
Could Netflix deliver same returns over next 20 years
The stock’s history shows what an early investment in a successful company can become but it doesn't tell investors what will happen next.Netflix still has to compete for viewers and advertisers, manage its content spending and deliver on its financial targets. Its future stock performance will depend on how the business develops and how investors value its growth as the future can't be predicted.
