Binance suspends withdrawals after $6.3 billion hack: Is your crypto safe? Here's what to do now
Binance has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals following a reported security incident involving an estimated $6.3 billion in digital assets. The crypto exchange has pledged to cover customer losses, while users are urged to protect the...

Binance has said customer funds are safe and promised to cover the estimated losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users and company reserves. But the investigation is still underway, and several details remain unclear.
However, Binance's co-founder and co-CEO Yi He said in a post on X that withdrawals should resume by Sunday.
What We Know About the Binance Hack So Far
Binance's initial investigation suggests that a DevOps engineer's laptop may have been compromised. The attacker may then have used access to a service container to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The exchange said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys had been leaked. It plans to publish a detailed technical report once the investigation is complete and the facts have been verified.
Tomas Sinicki, managing director at Coveron, an identity theft and scam protection service developed by Nord Security, said, "If reports are accurate, attackers compromised a single employee's laptop and used the legitimate access it held. That should tell every organization where the real perimeter now sits. Criminals no longer break in, they log in," as quoted by Yahoo Finance.
Should Binance Users Worry About Their Money
Binance has promised to cover the estimated losses, but the investigation is yet to reveal the full details of the incident. The temporary suspension of withdrawals also highlights a problem with keeping cryptocurrency on an exchange. Even if a user's account has not been compromised, access to funds can be restricted when the platform suspends withdrawals.
Sinicki advised crypto investors to avoid keeping more assets on an exchange than they need for trading. Those holding cryptocurrency for the long term can consider a wallet that gives them control over their private keys.

How to Avoid Scams While Binance Investigates
An incident like this can also create opportunities for scammers. Investors worried about their funds may receive fake messages from people pretending to represent an exchange's support team. These messages may promise to recover lost cryptocurrency or restore account access. Sinicki has warned users to be cautious about such offers, especially during periods of market panic.
Is Crypto Wallet Safer Than an Exchange
Keeping cryptocurrency on an exchange is convenient because the platform manages custody & users can access their holdings through an account. However investors must rely on the exchange's security systems and withdrawal policies.A self-custody wallet gives users more direct control over their cryptocurrency. But it also makes them responsible for protecting the keys needed to access it. Losing a recovery phrase can mean losing access to funds, while someone who obtains it may be able to take control of the wallet.
Software wallets also known as hot wallets, connect to the internet and can be useful for regular transactions. Hardware wallets/ cold wallets, are designed to keep private keys offline and can be an option for longer-term holdings.
Some investors keep smaller amounts in a hot wallet for daily use and store longer term holdings in cold storage as this can reduce exposure to certain online threats, although it doesn't eliminate every risk.
Easy Steps to Keep Your Crypto Safe
Investors can take several precautions to protect their accounts and wallets, as shared by Yahoo Finance.- Use a unique password and enable two factor authentication on exchange accounts
- Don't share private keys or seed phrases
- Keep recovery phrases offline rather than in screenshots, email drafts/ ordinary notes that could be exposed if a device/cloud account is compromised
- Review permissions granted to decentralized applications & remove those no longer needed
- Check website addresses before entering account details, avoid downloading wallet apps from unfamiliar links and don't approve transactions you don't understand
