Binance said it was working with law enforcement and blockchain partners to trace the affected assets. It also pledged to cover all losses, as investigators worked to find how the unauthorized transactions took place.
Crypto Heist: How a Compromised Laptop May Have Exposed Binance
Binance’s initial investigation suggested that an attacker may have gained access through a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, as per an AP report. The device may have allowed the attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Then further investigation uncovered additional entry points, suggesting the incident was not limited to a single compromised device. Binance has not yet released a complete technical account explaining how the attackers moved through its systems or how the withdrawals were authorized.
The exchange said it would publish a detailed post-mortem after the investigation was complete and its findings had been verified. Until then, the laptop remains a possible starting point rather than a complete explanation of the breach.

Binance’s Estimated $6.3 Billion Impact
The scale of the incident has drawn attention to the security of cryptocurrency exchanges as Blockchain intelligence firm TRM estimated that about $6.36 billion had been moved from Binance wallets across 10 blockchains, with most of the transfers occurring within roughly 20 minutes.TRM has described the incident as the largest cryptocurrency theft on record. However, the estimated impact should not be presented as definitive confirmation that the entire amount was stolen as Binance’s investigation is ongoing, and the exchange had not provided a complete account of the incident.
Binance also said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked. Its initial findings instead pointed to unauthorized withdrawal transactions potentially enabled by access through the compromised laptop.
Binance Freezes About $3 Billion in Affected Assets
Binance said it worked with blockchain partners to freeze approximately $3 billion in affected assets. It also revoked the authorization associated with the affected address and engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence firms to help trace and recover the funds. The company also pledged to cover all losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company funds. It said it would provide an updated proof of reserves after remediation was complete.
What Went Wrong With Binance’s Security
The key question is how a compromised employee laptop may have enabled unauthorized withdrawals and why investigators subsequently identified additional entry points.Binance’s initial findings offer a possible starting point, but they don't reveal the full sequence of events. The exchange has not confirmed that wallet private keys were exposed, nor has it released a complete explanation of how the attackers gained access and submitted the transactions.
The investigation remains ongoing. Binance has said it will publish a fuller technical account once its findings have been verified, while its recovery efforts continue.
