Frequent traveller? Know about status matching and how to use existing loyalty programmes to get another

Frequent-flyer and hotel loyalty programmes have traditionally followed a simple formula: spend more, stay more, or fly more to eventually earn elite status. Elite status offers perks such as lounge access, free breakfast (at hotels), and more. But increasingly, there is another route to get there. If you already have elite status with one airline or hotel chain, another programme may recognise it and grant you comparable status. This is known as ‘status matching’, and for frequent travellers in India, it can be a particularly powerful loyalty strategy, since major airlines are eyeing India due to our growing spend on premium travel.

A status match essentially allows one loyalty programme to recognise your credentials from another. Instead of spending 50 nights at a hotel chain or flying dozens of sectors with an airline to reach elite status, you show that another company already considers you a valuable customer. The new programme may then grant you equivalent status, usually for a limited period. The aim is to ease you in, and then you could switch your business to the new airline or hotel chain after experiencing the programme’s perks.

However, there’s a key distinction between a status match and a status challenge. With a match, the new status is often granted once your existing status is verified. With a challenge, you receive temporary status and must complete a specified number of flights, stays or qualifying spend within a defined period to retain it. Some promotions combine both: you get status immediately and then must show that you will actually use the programme.


Among the best places to track these opportunities is StatusMatch.com, which operates dedicated matching campaigns for airlines, hotels and other loyalty programmes. Such sites are worth checking periodically because these offers are often temporary and the list of eligible programmes changes.

Opportunities for frequent flyers

The most interesting development this year has been the number of programmes willing to match Air India Maharaja Club status.

At present, Silver, Gold and Platinum members of Air India Maharaja Club can match with the equivalent Enrich tiers at Malaysia Airlines. Enrich is a oneworld programme; so, an Air India elite can effectively use the existing Star Alliance status to get oneworld status without having to start from zero. Air India Platinum can match with Enrich Platinum, which corresponds to oneworld Emerald; Gold maps to Enrich Gold and oneworld Sapphire.

The offer is a paid match, with fees of $89, $199 and $349, respectively, and is currently available to eligible non-Malaysian applicants. That could be more valuable than it looks. An Air India Platinum flyer could, with one existing status, access benefits across another airline alliance, including oneworld.

Air India elites have another route into a different alliance via Air France-KLM Flying Blue. On StatusMatch.com, Flying Blue offers a paid status-match programme, which has Air India on its list of eligible airlines. Depending on the existing tier, applicants can get Flying Blue Silver, Gold or Platinum for 12 months. No flight challenge is required, but an application fee varies by tier. Gold and platinum are especially interesting as they provide SkyTeam Elite Plus benefits.

Frequent fliers holding elite status with other carriers under the SkyTeam alliance can also keep an eye on Vietnam Airlines’ Lotusmiles offering. Using its status-match programme, eligible members of competing airline loyalty offerings can apply to have their existing status recognised and get a corresponding Lotusmiles tier. As Vietnam Airlines is part of SkyTeam, Lotusmiles elite status can translate into SkyTeam benefits when flying eligible SkyTeam airlines. However, the exact eligible source programmes, destination tiers, fees and validity can vary by campaign and market.

An Indian frequent flyer who already holds high-level Star Alliance or oneworld status can diversify benefits across airline alliances without having to earn SkyTeam status entirely through flights. The key is to check the expiry date and any associated challenge criteria before using a potentially valuable existing status for the match.

Etihad Guest is another option. Indian residents holding status with different airline programmes can seek a match with Etihad Guest Silver or Gold. The matched status initially lasts four months, but Indian residents can extend it for another 12 months by completing at least one qualifying return flight marketed and operated by Etihad during the initial period. This is effectively a status match followed by a relatively manageable challenge.

Credit card as status generator

Status matching is not restricted to people who fly extensively. Premium credit cards are quietly offering a gateway to elite hotel status.

Mastercard has many such tie-ups. In India, its offers include a fast-track to GHA DISCOVERY elite status for eligible cardholders. World Elite and World Legend cards can get a fast-track to Titanium, while other eligible Mastercard tiers can receive lower levels of status. Covering over 1,000 hotels across 55 brands, GHA DISCOVERY appeals to travellers who use independent luxury and resort brands rather than sticking to a global chain.

Mastercard also has hotel-status benefits involving I Prefer Hotel Rewards, while its portfolio of travel offers includes ONYX Rewards and other hotel-related programmes. Cardholders should check the Mastercard Priceless portal to know these benefits better.

Eligible World and World Elite Mastercard cardholders in India can also receive HoteLux membership. World Mastercard holders can receive HoteLux Elite, while World Elite holders can receive HoteLux Elite Plus for a year under the current promotion.

Visa is playing in the same space. Its eligible Infinite cards issued in India can provide fast track to GHA DISCOVERY Titanium, potentially allowing cardholders to access elite benefits without first earning status through hotel stays. Visa Infinite also currently provides a HoteLux status benefit in the Asia-Pacific market, with eligible Infinite cardholders receiving one year of HoteLux Elite Plus.

Think of benefits across chains

The smartest use of status matching is not necessarily to find one match and stop. It is to think of loyalty status as an asset that can be transferred between ecosystems.

An Air India Platinum member can leverage that status into Malaysia Airlines Enrich Platinum and Flying Blue Platinum, thereby obtaining meaningful benefits across Star Alliance, oneworld and SkyTeam. A premium credit card could separately provide hotel status through GHA DISCOVERY and HoteLux.

Status challenges can then be used when a match is unavailable. United’s MileagePlus Premier Status Match Challenge, for example, temporarily grants eligible travellers Premier status before requiring qualifying United flying to retain it. Such challenges make sense when you already have a trip planned and would otherwise have to spend considerably more to earn the status organically.

The catch is these opportunities are rarely permanent. Many are once-in-a-lifetime, limited to a country of residence, need proof of existing status, and may disappear without notice. StatusMatch.com itself warns that some applications may result in a challenge rather than an outright match, and that fees may be payable once the application is approved. The lesson for Indian travellers is simple: before spending money to earn elite status from scratch, check whether the status you already have—or the premium credit card in your wallet—can get you there another way.
