EPFO extends September 2026 ECR deadline to October 31
Employers now have more time to file the Electronic Challan Cum Return (ECR) for September 2026. EPFO has extended the deadline from October 15 to October 31, 2026, citing the additional time needed because of the recent revision in the PF wage ceiling. The ECR contains member-wise wage and contribution details under EPF, EPS and EDLI.

What is ECR and why does it matter?
ECR is the Electronic Challan Cum Return that employers submit every month through the EPFO portal. It carries employee-level information on wages and contributions made under the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI). The September 2026 ECR is particularly important because the PF wage ceiling changed during the month.

Why has EPFO extended the September ECR deadline?
The extension is linked to the increase in the statutory PF wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, notified on September 17, 2026. This means September contributions have to reflect two different wage ceilings. EPFO initially set October 15 as the filing deadline but later gave employers an additional 16 days to complete the September ECR accurately.

September ECR has two wage-ceiling periods
For September 2026, employers have to account for the wage ceiling applicable during different parts of the month. Contributions for September 1–16 will be calculated using the earlier ₹15,000 ceiling, while contributions from September 17–30 will use the revised ₹25,000 ceiling. This makes the September ECR more complicated than a regular monthly filing.

Higher PF wage ceiling makes September filing more complex
Earlier, employers could generally file the monthly ECR using a single applicable wage ceiling. The September 2026 filing is different because the wage ceiling changed midway through the month. Employers therefore need to calculate and report contributions correctly for the two periods. EPFO’s deadline extension gives employers more time to complete these calculations and file the return.

Amnesty Scheme offers PF trusts several compliance relaxations
Under the PF Trust Amnesty Scheme, eligible establishments can benefit from waivers of certain statutory requirements, including the minimum employee headcount, corpus size and three-year compliance rule. After regularisation, establishments can operate with greater flexibility while complying either as an exempt or unexempt establishment, according to the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

EPFO is helping PF trusts meet the December deadline
EPFO is conducting seminars and meetings with industry bodies such as CII, ICAI and BSE to spread awareness about the Amnesty Scheme. Chartered accountants and statutory auditors have also been engaged to identify and assist eligible PF trusts. EPFO’s regional offices are conducting workshops and outreach programmes to explain the scheme and its compliance requirements.
