How EPF corpus would grow without any deposit

Your Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) balance continues to earn interest for 36 months, or three years, even after you retire at 58 years of age, as per an EPFO rule. However, at that stage, if you don’t withdraw your EPF corpus, it will stop earning interest and your EPF account will turn inoperative.

For instance, suppose a person retires at 58 with an EPF balance of Rs 50 lakh. If the amount keeps earning interest at a 8.25% rate over the following three years, their corpus would reach around Rs 63.42 lakh.

However, at 61 years of age, if they don’t withdraw that corpus, their EPF account would turn inoperative and they need to make it operative again.

The EPF interest rate is reviewed annually by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). The current interest rate is 8.25%.

Do you get interest in the EPF corpus after retirement?

A popular query among many retired employees is that would I continue getting interest in my EPF account after my retirement.

In a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), the EPFO has said that a retired employee aged 58 years can earn EPF interest for the next 3 years till he or she turns 61. Thereafter, the account becomes inoperative as per its directions and the employee should withdraw the accrued amount.

So, before withdrawing the EPF corpus, members must examine the state of their account and the latest EPFO guidelines.

Suppose you retire at the age of 58 with a Rs 50 lakh EPF corpus and make no additional contribution to your EPF account. Now, suppose your EPF corpus receives interest at a rate of 8.25% per annum for three years. The calculation would be as follows:

  • EPF amount at retirement (58 years of age) – Rs 5,000,000
  • Interest rate (per annum)- 8.25%
  • EPF balance after 3 years- Rs 63,42,402 (estimated)
  • Interest in 3 years- Rs 13,42,402 (estimated)
It illustrates the growth of Rs 50 lakh corpus at retirement by Rs 13.42 lakh in three years with no fresh contributions. But the result would be contingent on interest rates prevailing during the term.
