John Matthew Stafford, who was born on February 7, 1988, in Tampa, Florida, grew up playing football and became a star quarterback at Highland Park High School near Dallas, Texas. Stafford led his team to a perfect 15-0 season and won a state championship in 2005. Because of his strong arm and leadership, he was one of the top high school prospects in the country. Many major college programs wanted him, but he chose to play for the University of Georgia.

At Georgia, Stafford played three seasons and finished with a 30-9 record as a starter. He set several school records and ranked among the program’s all-time leaders in passing yards, touchdowns, and total offense. His success in college helped him gain national attention, and he entered the NFL Draft after his junior year.

In 2009, the Detroit Lions selected Stafford with the first overall pick. Over 12 seasons with the Lions, Stafford became the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, though playoff success was limited. In 2021, Stafford was traded to the Los Angeles Rams. In his first season, he led the team to a Super Bowl victory, finally winning his first NFL championship and cementing his legacy.

Veteran quarterback Stafford was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player on Thursday, February 5, 2025, after winning one of the closest MVP races in recent history. The 37-year-old Los Angeles Rams star narrowly beat New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, edging him by just one first-place vote. Stafford earned 24 of the 50 first-place votes, while Maye received 23.

Stafford had a standout season, leading the league with 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdown passes. His strong play powered the Rams throughout the year, though the team fell just short of reaching the Super Bowl. Los Angeles suffered a narrow 31-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game last month.
