Jobseeker frustrated after receiving irrelevant hiring tests. (AI illistratation)
A jobseeker has sparked discussion on Reddit after sharing a confusing and, ultimately, surprising hiring experience that unfolded after applying for what they believed was a perfectly suited role. In a post on the r/OfficePolitics subreddit, the user said they had applied for a copywriting position with a carefully tailored CV and cover letter. Just hours later, they received an email from the company asking them to complete a “skills test,” which was expected to take 15 to 20 minutes. Though skeptical, the applicant decided to give it a try.

However, they soon realized the test had little to do with writing or editing. Instead, it was filled with personality-based questions. Frustrated, the applicant closed the test without completing it and ignored the automated reminder emails that followed.

Two days later, another message arrived—this time inviting them to complete a “follow-up assessment” that would take around 30 minutes. The jobseeker deleted the email, unwilling to engage further with what they described as unnecessary hiring games.

The situation escalated when the hiring manager personally emailed them, urging them to complete the assessments. That message also went unanswered. Then, about a week later, the applicant was surprised to receive yet another email—this time inviting them to schedule an interview.

Confused by the process, the job seeker questioned why the company hadn’t simply arranged an interview from the outset, calling the approach unprofessional and needlessly complicated.

In an update, the user revealed an unexpected turn of events. They later learned that the assessments were a mandatory part of the company’s standard recruitment process. The applicant ultimately went ahead with the interview, preparing in advance after reading similar Reddit experiences. Despite facing a few tricky and off-topic questions, the interview went smoothly.

The post ended on a positive note: the jobseeker said they were offered the role and were set to begin their first day at the company the following day.
