Government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) on Tuesday launched an interoperable QR code to connect sellers, local artisans and neighbourhood shopkeepers with customers online and offline.

In its alpha phase, this tool allows sellers to generate a unique QR code that customers can scan using ONDC-registered buyer apps like Magicpin and Paytm. T Koshy, chief executive of ONDC, said, "Local shopkeepers, street vendors, and artisans can now be discovered by anyone, anywhere."

Sellers can display their QR codes on storefronts, products, marketing materials, or social media to connect with customers offline and online. A scan with any QR scanner app or ONDC buyer apps (Paytm and Magicpin at present) links consumers to the seller’s online store.

Sellers are either not online because of demand generation costs or are having to pay a high revenue share, ONDC said.
