Redefining corporate leadership and enterprise growth with CFOs and CHROs

The role of CFOs and CHROs is shifting from basic management to high-level strategy. Today’s business leaders need to stay flexible and bridge the gap between their workforce’s potential and smart financial decision-making to drive real, lasting g...

As business uncertainties and technological disruption reshape organisations, the C-suite is undergoing a transformational shift, taking on a broader strategic role. Modern organisations require more than defensive management; they demand agile leadership capable of connecting human potential with strategic financial discipline.

While Human Resource (HR) leaders align talent, skills, and workplace culture with organisational goals, on the other hand, finance leaders balance capital allocation, innovation, and risk. Together, they initiate resilience, productivity and sustainable, long-term growth.

At the center of this realignment are Chief Human Resources Officers (CHROs) and Chief Financial Officers (CFOs), two roles expanding far beyond traditional boundaries to act as co-architects of enterprise resilience and long-term value creation.

The role of the CHRO has evolved from traditional personnel management and compliance into a central pillar of corporate strategy. Rapid advancements and evolution in artificial intelligence, evolving employee expectations, and an increasing focus on organisational capability have helped HR leaders redefine workforce dynamics to deliver measurable business outcomes.

A Deloitte analysis found that the range of skills expected of CHROs has increased by 23% over five years, the highest rise among the C-suite roles studied. At the ET CXO Leadership Forum, HR leaders discussed how this evolving mandate is changing recruitment, performance management and workplace culture.

With the workplace changing faster than ever, key developments are shaping modern HR leadership. The corporate recruitment process is moving away from strict reliance on academic credentials toward practical assessments and problem-solving exercises. Other than the recruitment, HR is identifying emerging skill gaps and investing in reskilling or training employees and ensuring that they can apply their capabilities to the changing business environment.

Integrating AI into workflow is reshaping the role of CHROs. While automation can improve efficiency and transform existing roles, its value depends on addressing clear business needs and delivering measurable results.

CHROs are now collaborating with technology officers to identify where AI augments human performance, re-evaluating productivity metrics to reflect collaborative human-machine output.

Apart from putting AI to work, building organisational trust remains central. Engagement relies heavily on structured listening mechanisms that convert feedback into visible action, directly influencing employee and workplace culture.

The CFO’s role is shifting from historic financial reporting to forward-looking enterprise strategy. In Grant Thornton Bharat’s barometer, 50% of respondents identify strategic planning and decision support as finance’s most important role, but only 23% spend most of their time on it.

Such data reveals how the role of CFOs keeps on expanding far beyond the financial area. Leaders across the financial sector are expected to navigate the pressure that comes along while protecting long-term growth. With the central theme of ‘Strategic CXO’, the Economic Times CXO Leadership forum discussed how the function of financial leaders is evolving from traditional scorekeepers to a strategic partner to the CEO and wider organisation in general.

To bridge this gap, modern CFOs actively balance risk mitigation with disciplined innovation through strategic capital allocation, de-risking technology adoption, and embedding ESG & sustainability.

The intersection of HR and finance represents sustainable corporate growth. While CFOs optimise balance sheets and capital allocation, CHROs optimise the human capital required to execute those strategic plans. When financial strategy and talent management operate together, organisations build the agility needed to navigate market disruption, capitalise on emerging technology, and deliver consistent stakeholder value.
