Just picture November 1. You reached home early morning, you have put away your costume on the couch, you just crawled into bed and decided to sleep for sometime and the pumpkins that welcomed trick-or-treaters is beginning to collapse on the doorstep. After a while when you clean your house, you pick the iconic Halloween pumpkin which you used last night and just throw it in the trash can outside. You are just focused on getting the house back in order.
The decoration has finished its job but its impact on the environment, however, depends partly on where it goes next.
A pumpkin may look harmless beside plastic packaging. After all, it grew in the soil and will eventually rot. Yet being biodegradable does not make its destination irrelevant.

Why do Halloween pumpkins produce methane in landfills?
When you bury organic material in a landfill it decomposes without oxygen and microorganisms breaking down that material generate methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. This is not just a Halloween problem. The US Environmental Protection Agency has estimated in its report that wasted food accounts for 58% of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Pumpkins are one visible, seasonal part of that larger waste stream.
You might not think about this when you are clearing out the Halloween trash and of course, why would you, That trash is going to disappear as soon as it leaves your doorstep, so nobody thinks what may happen beyond that. But no, that same trash is going to emit methane and it is going to reach to you if the gas is in the atmosphere.
What happens when a pumpkin becomes compost?
Composting gives decomposition a different setting. According to the EPA, this is a process which requires oxygen, so when microorganisms break down the organic material, it would turn into a stable product which will evidently improve the soil texture.A successful composting means a good airflow is required, and it also needs a good amount of moisture alongside other needed materials. Composting a pumpkin, however, is different from composting dry leaves.
Pumpkin scraps in soil provide different nutrition to the soil, and the finished material can help soil retain water and support plant growth.
How Pumpkin Smash events offer another ending
Some US communities have turned disposal into an extension of the celebration. Pumpkin Smash events collect unwanted pumpkins for composting, sometimes letting participants break them apart before collection. The environmental benefit comes from their destination after the fun.Illinois nonprofit SCARCE began the initiative with Wheaton and Elmhurst in 2014. Its organisers report that more than 200 tons of pumpkins were composted through 125 known sites in 2025. Most 2026 events are scheduled for November 7, although local arrangements vary.
Wheaton’s event will run from 9 a.m. to noon on November 7. Residents are asked to remove decorations before bringing pumpkins to the collection site.
Such programmes give people without garden compost heaps somewhere to take part.
What should you remove before composting a pumpkin?
Firstly you need to remove the non organic materials you have used in your pumpkin for decoration. Illinois Extension’s October 2026 guidance says to remove candles and other non-organic materials. Its instructions also specify removing paint. Households should check their chosen facility’s acceptance rules before arriving. After Extension collection events, the pumpkins are transported to composting facilities. People unable to attend may have alternatives through local waste providers or private collection services. Checking those arrangements before Halloween ends makes the clean-up easier.
Why leaving pumpkins in the woods is not composting
Taking a pumpkin into a nearby natural area may sound like returning it to nature. Illinois Extension issues caution against this step. If you dump decorations in the green area next door, you will be suffocating the plants which are already going there. And if you dump leftover food there it can generate toxic gas while decomposing and and animals in traffic areas. So ending the Halloween with a better plan may this time mean you have contributed something for your environment. The pumpkin can leave the porch without automatically joining the household rubbish.
