Leader, Congress- Ghulam Nabi Azad began his career in politics in 1973 as a block secretary of the Congress Committee
- In 1975, he was appointed as the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Youth Congress
- In 1980, he was promoted as the all-India president of the Youth Congress
- He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 after winning the elections from the Washim constituency in Maharashtra. As a Member of Parliament, Azad was first appointed as the Union Deputy Minister for Law, Justice and Company Affairs, and then as the Union Deputy Minister for Information and Broadcasting
- In 1985, he was re-elected for a second term to the Lower House of Parliament. This time, he was put in charge as the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs and as the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies
- In 1990, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time. During his first term, in 1991, he was appointed as the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs. In 1993, he was given charge as the Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism
- Azad got a second term in the Upper House in 1996. In this term, he was appointed as a member of the Standing Committee on Energy, the Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, and in a joint parliamentary committee on the functioning of Wakf boards
- In 2002, he was re-elected for a third term to the Rajya Sabha during which time he was elected as the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and as the Minister of Urban Development
- In 2005, Azad was elected as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir
- In 2009, he was back in the Rajya Sabha for a fourth term and was put in charge of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare
- In 2014, he became the leader of the Opposition in the Upper House of Parliament
- Azad was elected for a fifth term to the Rajya Sabha in 2015
- He was honoured with the best parliamentarian award in 2015
- Azad retired from the Rajya Sabha in February 2021
