The Portuguese capital's culinary scene is a vibrant weave of flavours, deeply rooted in its historic trade routes. Among its gems is Belcanto, an iconic restaurant that began as a men's club in 1958. When chef Jose Avillez took charge in 2012, Belcanto transformed into a temple of contemporary Portuguese cuisine.

Housed since 2019 in an elegant space with vaulted ceilings, minimalist chandeliers and streaming natural light, Belcanto offers an intimate dining experience. Diners can choose between two tasting menus that showcase innovative interpretations of Portuguese classics. Or, opt for a la carte selections to savour a personal journey through Avillez's art.

Standout dishes include grilled hake with coriander, cured egg yolk and black truffle, and the 'Garden of the Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs' - a playful combo of egg, crunchy bread and mushrooms. The roast squab, paired with mushrooms, pastry and a cinnamon- hazelnut sauce, is another masterpiece, while scarlet shrimp with green curry and apple brings a taste of the ocean to your plate.
