Thailand has announced a new initiative offering tourists up to $14,000 in medical coverage in case of accidents as the kingdom tries to entice travelers back following the pandemic-induced downturn.

Under the scheme announced on Thursday, the government will cover expenses up to 500,000 baht ($14,000) and provide compensation of up to one million baht in the event of death.

Amidst the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, travel restrictions have severely impacted Thailand's crucial tourism sector, with arrivals not rebounding as swiftly as anticipated by officials.

The Thailand Traveller Safety scheme began on January 1 and will remain active until August 31.

Thailand has long been a favorite destination among young backpackers worldwide, drawn by its sun-kissed beaches and adrenaline-fueled adventures. However, accidents are not uncommon, and there have been instances of young Europeans facing substantial medical bills due to inadequate insurance coverage.

The government clarifies that the scheme will not cover accidents resulting from negligence, intent, illegal activities, or risky behavior. Tourists interested in the scheme can register through the Thailand Traveller Safety website at tts.go.th.

Thailand has been announcing various measures over the past few months to boost tourism in the country. In January this year, Thailand's cabinet gave the green light to a tax cut on alcoholic beverages and entertainment venues.

In December last year the Kingdom also extended operating hours of nightclubs and entertainment venues in popular tourist destinations like Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, and Samui, allowing them to stay open an additional two hours until 4 AM.

Thailand has waived visa requirements for travelers from India and Taiwan last November as well, until May 2024.

In 2023, approximately 28 million individuals visited Thailand, marking an increase from 11 million the previous year. Nevertheless, this figure remains significantly lower than the 40 million arrivals recorded in 2019, the year preceding the pandemic.
