Singapore is making it easier for tourists to enter the country

In a bid to streamline border crossings and reduce wait times, Singapore is implementing a new system that allows drivers entering the country through two land checkpoints to use a QR code instead of traditional passports. The nation's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority announced that, starting from March 19, travelers arriving or departing through the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints can generate a single QR code prior to arrival, simplifying the clearance process for everyone in the vehicle.

"This means that instead of handing their passports to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer at the car counter, they will only need to have scanned a single QR code which they generate prior to arriving at the checkpoint, for all the travellers in the car," Immigration & Checkpoints Authority of Singapore said in a statement.

The use of QR codes is expected to significantly cut down overall wait times, potentially reducing congestion by approximately 30%, particularly during busy periods when workers cross the border from Malaysia. This initiative aligns with Singapore's commitment to embracing technology to enhance efficiency and adapt to changing travel dynamics.


The passport-free clearance system will not be limited to the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints but will also be extended to other land checkpoints with Malaysia. By leveraging technology, Singapore aims to make border crossings smoother and more convenient for travelers.

Singapore has been actively deploying new technologies at Changi Airport, a renowned hub for its futuristic design and operational efficiency. In a move to further facilitate travel, residents and visitors departing from the island will gradually be able to clear checkpoints without using traditional passports.

The Singaporean government had previously announced plans to replace manual counters at passenger halls with approximately 800 automated lanes, utilizing a new contactless automated border control system. The deployment of this system began in the first quarter of 2024, following successful trials at Changi Airport's Terminal 4 in 2019. In January alone, 5.43 million people passed through Singapore's main airport.

Tuesday's announcement not only marks a significant step towards modernizing border control but also sets the stage for future projects like the Rapid Transit Link between Singapore and Johor Bahru in Malaysia. This transit project, expected to be operational by the end of 2026, will accommodate a peak capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, further enhancing connectivity between the two nations.
