Canada’s Ontario has received an allocation of 21,500 nominations for its Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) in 2024, reported CIC News.
This number represents a hike of 5,000 nominations over 2023’s 16,500.
Ontario got more allocation after a meeting last November where immigration ministers from all Canadian regions met with Federal Minister Marc Miller to discuss immigration's effects on their areas.
Every province and territory (with the exceptions of Quebec and Nunavut) receives an annual allocation of nominations for its PNP from Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), although not all provinces make their allocations public.
Increased allocations this year are not unexpected, says CIC News.
At the November FMRI meeting, provinces and territories asked for more say in picking immigrants and more spots for their programs. Canada is now welcoming 1,10,000 new permanent residents through the PNP in 2024, more than through the federal Express Entry.

In March 2023, at a similar meeting, the FMRI approved a multi-year plan for PNP allocations. This allows provinces to plan local infrastructure to support both current residents and newcomers. Ontario hasn't announced any notional allocations for the next two years.
Provincial immigration results from March 29 to April 5
British Columbia British Columbia on April 3 invited 83 candidates in four draws of the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP).

The largest draw was general and invited 30 candidates from five categories. Skilled Workers, Skilled Workers (EEBC option) and International Graduates required a minimum score of 130, says CIC News.
Alberta The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) recently invited 48 candidates from the Dedicated Healthcare Pathway with Alberta job offers. This pathway is aligned with Express Entry, requiring candidates to have a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

In this draw, candidates needed a CRS score of 300 or above to be eligible. This marks the eighth draw for this category in the current year.
Prince Edward Island PEI issued 66 invitations on April 4 to Labour and Express Entry candidates employed in healthcare, manufacturing, and early childhood education sectors. This draw marks the first of the month for PEI PNP and the sixth this year, according to CIC News.

A visa, issued by the Government of Canada, serves the sole purpose of permitting entry into the country or transit through a Canadian airport. It is a physical sticker placed in your passport, containing essential details like your name, date of birth, and the purpose of your visit (worker, student, or visitor), along with issuance and expiry dates.
Importantly, a visa does not confer the right to work or study in Canada. Its primary function is to facilitate legal entry into the country. Even if labeled as a worker or student visa, it does not grant work or study authorization.

For individuals from countries requiring visas, obtaining one before arrival is mandatory, typically through the Canadian Embassy or Visa Application Center (VAC). Failure to possess a valid visa can lead to delays or denial of boarding for flights to Canada.
Should a visa expire after arrival, renewal applications can be made within Canada. However, departing without a valid visa means being barred from re-entry, even with a valid work or study permit.

On the other hand, a permit is a separate document specifying permissions and limitations regarding work or study activities within Canada, including any associated restrictions or conditions. Unlike a visa, a permit directly authorizes work or study and must be presented to employers or educational institutions.
However, a permit alone does not grant entry or re-entry into Canada – that is the role of the visa.
