If you are currently employed by a mainland Dubai-based company and plan to purchase a house to qualify for the UAE Golden Visa, you might be wondering what will happen to your employment visa.
Here is what you need to know:
Eligibility for Employment with a Golden Visa
As a Golden Visa holder, you remain eligible to work in the UAE. According to Article 7 of the Employment Law and Article 6(1)(j) of Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, a work permit can be issued to an establishment registered with the Ministry that wishes to employ an employee holding a Golden Visa. This means that holding a Golden Visa does not disqualify you from taking up employment.
Informing Your Employer Before obtaining the Golden Visa, it is crucial to inform your employer about the impending change in your residency status. This communication is necessary because your employer will need to cancel your existing work permit and UAE residency visa. Proper notification ensures a smooth transition and avoids any legal complications.
The process for canceling a work permit involves several steps. You must submit an application for canceling the work permit through the Ministry’s specified channels. This process requires completing the necessary data and attached documents, paying any applicable fines, and acknowledging that the worker has received all entitlements. This procedure is essential to transition your employment status legally and efficiently.
Reapplying for a Work Permit Once your work permit is canceled, you can sign a new employment contract with your current employer or a new employer. The employer will then need to apply for a new work permit for you as a Golden Visa holder.
Requirements for New Work Permit To obtain a work permit as a Golden Visa holder, the following documents and steps are required:
Photograph: A clear colored photo with a white background.
Valid Passport and Residency Visa: A copy of a valid passport (valid for at least six months) and a copy of the valid Golden Visa.
Employment Contract: An approved employment contract issued by the Ministry, signed by both the employer and the employee.
For skill levels 1 and 2: Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
For skill levels 3 and 4: Diploma graduate or higher.
For skill level 5: High school certificate.
Professional License: If applicable, a professional license issued by the competent authority (e.g., doctors, nurses, teachers, fitness trainers, advocates).

Maintain clear communication with your employer regarding your change in residency status and the necessary steps to transition your work permit. This transparency helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures a smooth process. Legal Compliance: Ensure all documentation and processes comply with UAE labor laws and regulations to avoid any legal issues. Adhering to legal requirements is critical for a hassle-free transition.
