Centre issues notice to Meta over WhatsApp usernames feature; flags fraud risks
The Central Government has issued a notice to Meta over the proposed rollout of the WhatsApp usernames feature in India. Meta has been directed to submit a detailed explanation within three days and has been asked not to roll out the feature until consultations with the government are completed. The notice also warns that regulatory action may be initiated under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021.
