Tata Sons has retained the Indian Premier League (IPL) title sponsorship rights from 2024 to 2028 by matching Aditya Birla Group's (ABG) bid, sources close to the development told ET.

A top BCCI official, on condition of anonymity, said the five year deal is worth Rs 2500 crore.

Tata Sons has been the IPL's title sponsor since 2022, paying Rs 670 crore for the two-year rights.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not made an official announcement yet.

As reported earlier, ABG and Tata Sons were the only companies in contention for the IPL title sponsorship rights.

As per the tender floated on December 12, the BCCI had set Rs 1750 crore as the base price for the five-year rights, or Rs 350 crore per year for 74 matches.

ABG was the sole bidder until January 12, the last date to submit bids. As per the agreement between BCCI and Tata Sons, the salt-to-software conglomerate had the right to match any winning bid.

Industry sources have attributed subdued interest in IPL title sponsorship rights to the right-to-match clause which had confused many prospective bidders.

BCCI had also recommended bidders apply for 84 and 94 matches at base prices of Rs 375 crore and Rs 400 crore, respectively.

Experts say that the IPL title rights holder will have to pay a sponsorship fee based on their bid amount for 84 and 94 games.

The BCCI plans to raise the number of matches to 84 in 2025 and 2026 and 94 in 2027 from the current format of 74 matches.

Tata Sons had taken over as the IPL title sponsor after Vivo abandoned the deal amid the backlash against Chinese brands over border tensions.

DLF, Pepsi, Vivo, and Dream11 have previously held the rights, the annual value of which rose from Rs 40 crore paid by DLF for 2008–12 to Rs 440 crore per year offered by Vivo for 2018–19.
