In the wake of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to IOA President PT Usha to seek a comprehensive review of the situation. According to sources, PM Modi requested first-hand information from Usha about the current circumstances and urged her to explore all available options to address the issue. He also advised Usha to file a strong protest regarding Phogat’s disqualification if it could potentially benefit her case.

On Wednesday, Modi expressed his deep sorrow over Phogat’s disqualification from the Women’s 50kg wrestling event. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi conveyed his support: “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India's pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today's setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.”

Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg category just before her scheduled Gold Medal match against the United States' Sarah Ann Hildebrandt. According to a statement from the Indian Olympic contingent, Phogat weighed in a few grams over the 50kg limit despite the team's efforts to manage the situation.

The statement read: “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women's Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand.”

This disqualification marks a significant setback for Phogat, who had been a strong contender and source of national pride.

Vinesh Phogat's disqualification has altered the medal standings. USA's Hildebrandt will receive the gold medal, and Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom Phogat defeated in the semifinals, will be awarded the bronze. The silver medal position will remain unfilled due to Phogat’s disqualification.
