From Vinesh Phogat to Nisha Dahia: Bad lucks faced by Indian women wrestlers at the Olympics
India’s hopes soared high as Vinesh Phogat made a remarkable run to the Women’s Wrestling 50kg final at the Olympics. Starting her day with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Japan’s Yui Susaki, the defending Olympic and world champion who had been unbeaten in 82 international bouts, Vinesh Phogat's journey was nothing short of spectacular. Phogat then cruised through her matches, defeating world number 7 Ukrainian Ostava Livach and Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez with a commanding 5-0 win to secure her place in the final.
Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification
However, just when it seemed Vinesh Phogat was on the brink of making history, the Indian contingent had to announce her disqualification from the 50 kg class. Despite her valiant efforts, Vinesh Phogat was slightly over the 50kg limit during the weigh-in, leading to her disqualification. The Indian Olympic Association expressed regret over the situation, requesting respect for Phogat's privacy and focusing on the ongoing competitions.
Meanwhile, Nisha Dahiya faced her own series of setbacks. In her quarter-final bout in the 68 kg class against Pak Sol Gum of North Korea, Dahiya initially appeared poised for victory. Leading 6-1 after the first period and 8-1 in the second, she was interrupted by a finger injury. Despite medical attention and tapping her finger, Dahiya struggled to regain her momentum. Her opponent took advantage of her weakened state, ultimately securing a 10-8 victory in a dramatic turn of events.
The match ended in tears for Dahiya, who was visibly distressed and later taken to the hospital. Preliminary reports suggested she might have dislocated her shoulder and fractured her finger.
