Australia defeat reveals why patience may be crucial in Colombo.
Sikandar Raza said restraint was the key to Zimbabwe’s 23-run victory over Australia at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on February 13, outlining a clear blueprint for success at the venue.

In the day game, Zimbabwe posted 169 for 2 before bowling Australia out for 146 in 19.3 overs, registering one of the tournament’s biggest upsets against a side led by Travis Head. Raza’s tactical approach proved decisive on a surface that became progressively slower.

Restraint key on slowing Colombo surface

Speaking after the match, Raza said Zimbabwe resisted the temptation to chase an overly ambitious total despite being well placed at 70 for 1 after 10 overs. “70 at 10, and we said we’re happy. Somebody said in the changing room that 190 is on, and I said, no. If you look for 190 now, it is 140 all-out. Just keep going at eights and nines and see what happens,” he said.

Drawing on previous tours of Sri Lanka, Raza noted that the wicket tends to slow down as the game progresses. “We understand the wicket starts to get slower and lower, and the moment you try to go too hard too early, a cluster of wickets can fall,” he explained.

Zimbabwe instead targeted a total in the 170–175 range. Raza said he sent a message to the set batter not to panic if boundaries were not forthcoming. “We told him he’s doing a great job. It doesn’t matter if he’s trying and not hitting — he doesn’t have to panic. As long as he’s there, we’ll get to a good total. I thought 175 is what we were looking for,” he added. He later acknowledged that he felt 170 would be sufficient on the surface.

Zimbabwe complemented their batting effort with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding, claiming four wickets in the powerplay and saving crucial runs. “With the ball and in the field, some of the boundary stops were unbelievable. It looked like the boys really wanted it. Happy to get the win,” Raza said.

Australia reject pitch as excuse

Australia batter Matt Renshaw said the pitch was not the reason for their defeat, adding that teams from the sub-continent do not complain about conditions when touring Australia.

“The boundaries here (Premadasa) are quite big so it's just cricket. But yeah, it's probably just trying to adjust the conditions as well as we can so that when we get to these conditions we know what the game plan is, we know how we get best suited,” Renshaw said.

He credited Zimbabwe’s bowlers for executing their plans effectively. “Yeah, probably makes it quite tough to chase 170 out there. They bowled really well at the start, took some early wickets, and felt like every time we built some momentum that partnership with Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) was obviously important but couldn't get enough momentum in there to chase that down and it was just too many to knock,” he said.

Raza’s assessment of the conditions could hold relevance for upcoming matches at the same venue, including India’s group-stage clash against Pakistan. India faced difficulties against spin in their previous outing against Namibia, with Hardik Pandya expressing concerns about the surface. Conditions in Sri Lanka are expected to offer greater grip and turn, underscoring the importance of measured batting on what may again be a challenging pitch.
