The two sides have previously met just once in a T20I warm-up game, which took place during the 2016 T20 World Cup in India.

As hosts and one of the favourites, India head into the tournament with solid momentum after securing a recent series victory over New Zealand. Captain Suryakumar Yadav is in impressive form, having earned the Player of the Series award against New Zealand with three half-centuries in five innings.

South Africa, captained by Aiden Markram, also arrive with confidence following a productive SA20 season, despite dealing with a few injury concerns. The Proteas combine experienced players with promising youngsters and possess a potent pace attack.
