Trinamool Congress challenges government statistics on Parliament productivity

New Delhi: As the first session of 17th Lok Sabha ended on Wednesday, the Opposition challenged the government’s claims of it being the most productive session in over a decade.

Trinamool Congress has put out statistics to counter the ruling BJP government’s claims and pointed out that for the first time in 20 years deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha has not been elected by the government in the first session.

Data from 13th to 16th Lok Sabha reveals that the governments have elected the deputy Speaker -- by tradition a senior MP from the Opposition -- in the first session.


In the 13th, 14th and 15th Lok Sabha, a deputy Speaker was elected in the sixth sitting.
